ULTIMATELY REQUIRING 80-100 HOURS OF LABOR, EACH ONE OF MY BOARDS BECOMES UNIQUE FOR THE MATERIALS, COLORS, FINISH AND FOR THEIR FLAWS ALONG WITH THE STORIES I EXPERIENCE IN THEIR CREATION. THIS ALONG WITH THE DESIRE TO CREATE ONE THAT IS “PERFECT” COMPELS ME.
MY WOOD SOURCES RETRIEVE NATURALLY FALLEN TREES. EACH MUST MEET SPECIFIC SIZE REQUIREMENTS. ULTIMATELY, MOTHER NATURE DETERMINES THE OUTCOME. HAVING SEVERAL WOOD SOURCES OFFERS AN ENDLESS VARIETY WITH WHICH TO WORK. THE SELECTION PROCESS IS EQUAL PARTS EXCITING AND DAUNTING.
MY LEATHER IS FINE-FURNITURE GRADE. WHEN POSSIBLE I USE SCRAPS RATHER THAN NEW PELTS. EACH IS CHOSEN FOR ITS COLOR, TEXTURE, GAGE AND AROMA. THERE ARE ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES.
IN THE EARLY STAGES I WILL MAKE EACH PIECE FOR SALE. HOWEVER, A PROCESS THAT EXCITES ME IS DESIGNING A FINISHED PRODUCT WITH ITS OWNER IN MIND. FOR EACH OWNER OF MY BOARDS THAT HE, SHE OR THEY OWN SOMETHING WHOLLY UNIQUE AND THAT CANNOT BE REPLICATED IS MY HOPE. HAVING INPUT TO THIS OUTCOME IS EXTRAORDINARY.
Working with some beautiful Magnolia. This beautiful and easy-to-work-with wood leads to lots and lots of color options and because of the checking (splitting) the wood did when drying, it lent itself to some creative supports…Moons! Into its second coat, it’s taking on some really pretty attributes. Stay tuned to see the leather colors this one’s gonna get!
